There are several stages to sleep, and each one is important for recovery, but perhaps the most important stage of sleep is called REM sleep, REM stands for Rapid eye movement, and is the final stage of sleep (where the magic happens) the longer you can stay in REM sleep the more alert you will feel the following day and the easier you will be able to cope with every day tasks.
